Once a core of Kingston tweeps start using the #ygk hashtag, it should catch on fairly quickly and become established. It certainly was an interesting experience participating in the hashtag discussion.

I can't imagine that there are really more people online looking for tweets related to good ol' Norman Rogers Airport than the city at large.

#YGK is distinct, easy to decipher and spare on characters. Amazing that there's actually controversy about it.

Some folks just like to be contrary.

-- Shaun,

Excellent points, thank you for sharing. And it's very true that we can't enforce anything on Twitter, only advocate and support. People will use what is most accurate and relevant, and Dr. Brown's criteria for selecting the #ygk hashtag are spot on. Airport codes are used all over, and I'm sure that many people who use Twitter have seen them used for other cities (#yyz, #yeg, etc). It's easier to 'jump on board' with #ygk since airport codes are a highly visible and widely accepted hashtag for cities.

-- Jim,

As Naila said, #KingstON and #kingston are seen as the same by Twitter. Though I like the way you were thinking!

-- Terry,

We've heard from people who were confused by #ygk and didn't know that it was our airport code. But with more widespread usage, I'm sure those who are confused by it will either look it up or ask what it is, which will allow us (and other Kingston users) to explain quickly and simply what it is and why it's used. But people not knowing or understanding it on sight is an issue; it's not as immediately evident as, say, #KingstonON. Hopefully, we can help to educate!

@ Jim, Unfortunately, Twitter doesn't discriminate against case, so #KingstON and #Kingston are the same thing. Also, I'm totally for #ygk. Sure, when I first moved here, I didn't know that was the airport code. But a quick google search would help people figure that out.

Also, the goal isn't to replace "Kingston" with #YGK. Most people (me included) will write Kingston out in the tweet and add the #YGK tag for tracking purposes.

As for the claim that if there's an airport-related disaster/cancellation/issue the tag will be too cluttered with day-to-day Kingston stuff and/or the opposite, I think that's bullocks. If anything, having more people using #YGK means your chances of finding a ride back to Kingston will be increased, not decreased, because of the use of it by like-minded individuals.

That idea was tossed around during the municipal elections and met with some positive reception (although not widespread use). I think that it's a good idea once people learn that #YGK is our airport code. My money would be on few people knowing that as of right now.

#YGK makes a lot of sense in that it's brief and unique to our city. Only problem I see, it doesn't say "Kingston." People outside of Kingston probably would have no idea (unless they look it up) and most Kingstonians would not know what this meant without an explanation (there are a surprising number of people here who are unaware that we have an airport, and I'm not kidding). When I Googled "Kingston," most of the results were for here, then I realized Google knows where I am, so naturally they'll return more results for here than any other Kingston. #KingstonON does leave one with only 129 characters. So how about #KingstON? Too cute?

I live in Edmonton or #yeg and follow a friend of mine who lives out in #YGK ;) @MuddyBrown and we've had a few tweets back and forth over this.

I think the airport codes are good because as you said they are unique and as far as I can tell Edmontonians have adopted the airport codes pretty quickly. There really wasn't any debate. It's unique, short, and categorizes the tweets for all things. Even on traffic there is a #yegtraffic hashtag or #yegweather that gets used quite often. It's simple and much better than saying #kingstonweather which would seriously eat into the 140 character limit.

I think for Toronto most people (and I don't know for a fact) would just use #yyz as that's the main airport and most commonly used. Again only assuming. Smaller cities, they are out of luck ;)

Honestly there really isn't much of a debate over it, it just gets used and if people don't want to, oh well. Standards on twitter/internet are impossible to enforce, it really just has to be adopted, the more that people use it the more it will just get used. I think that's really what happened with #yeg
